Professional internships for the Master's degree in Computer Science - Artificial Intelligence
By supporting the internships for the Master’s in Computer Science—AI program, the IID reaffirms its commitment to training a new generation of professionals equipped to accelerate the transition to AI in Quebec organizations.
The Master’s in Computer Science – AI (MIIA) offers a practice-oriented curriculum, thanks in part to an eight-month internship at a company (two consecutive full-time sessions). Upon completion of the program, students will be able to apply AI concepts and techniques to solve complex problems in professional settings.
The IID oversees the industry internship component of the MIIA program. The academic curriculum as a whole is the responsibility of the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Université Laval.

Companies and organizations are invited to submit their internship opportunities to students enrolled in the program. The IID oversees the submission of opportunities, the matching of students with opportunities, and the full monitoring of the internship.

The company internship, its process and conditions
The goal of the professional internships associated with the MIIA is to support and promote the transfer of expertise to socio-economic sectors, thereby revitalizing the regional ecosystem by quickly training a large number of experts.
Each internship—for both the student and the company—is supported and supervised by a research professional affiliated with the Institute for Intelligence and Data (IID), at a rate of one day per week for the duration of the internship, funded through Mitacs flexible funds.
These are mandatory end-of-program internships:

21 credits organized into two courses;
-
6 out of 8 courses must be completed beforehand;

Requires a minimum B- average.
This is a full-time internship spread over two consecutive sessions (i.e., 8 months):

80% on-the-job training over 6 months.

One day a week on the ULaval campus for scientific supervision.

Preparation of the final report over 2 months.
The internship corresponds to the final assessment of the master's degree:

Final report evaluated by one or more professors;
-
Report must include technical and scientific aspects.
Internship funding model
With support from Mitacs
-
The company is asked to contribute $15,000 for an 8-month consecutive internship (2 installments of $7,500, plus taxes), with a Mitacs match of $15,000 for a total budget of $30,000

A $20,000 stipend is offered to each intern.

The Mitacs matching grant covers the costs associated with the supervision of IID research professionals.
The grant application for the internship is prepared by an IID research professional based on the selected internship projects, following discussion with the company. Thus, each company or organization will be contacted individually to define and refine the project, which is then submitted to Mitacs one to two months before it begins to secure funding and undergo an ethics review, if necessary.
Without Mitacs Support
In the case of a company or organization that is not eligible for the Mitacs grant program, or that does not wish to use this support:

The company or organization must pay the student a salary (equivalent to a $20,000 scholarship) and pay the IID the amount of $10,000 + (indirect research costs) with an agreement for professional support
Internship Calendar - Winter, Summer, and Autumn Sessions each year
For internships beginning in mid-January (winter session):

Deadline for collecting internship opportunities and sending project proposals to students: by the end of September

Meeting and matching of interns: by mid-October

Submission of the grant application: around the end of November, depending on the progress of the project specifications
For internships beginning in mid-May (summer session):

For internships beginning in mid-September (fall session):

Showcase of internship projects completed as part of the Professional Master’s degree in Computer Science – IA
Discover some of the 137 internships completed (as of April 2024) as part of the Professional Master’s degree in Computer Science – Artificial Intelligence. These are examples of short projects, carried out over an eight-month period by a student, with the support of an IID data scientist. In some cases, these are the first steps towards AI for an organization, while for others, these projects are R&D or business development opportunities.
