IID Excellence Scholarships

The Intelligence and Data Institute (IID) is offering five scholarships to students supervised (directly or jointly) by an IID research member. The scholarships are intended to support and encourage graduate studies (master’s, doctoral) and undergraduate internships in fields related to artificial intelligence (AI) and data science at Université Laval.

Objective

To enable students enrolled in an undergraduate program at a Quebec university to complete a summer internship at Laval University in order to gain research experience in artificial intelligence or data science.

IID Undergraduate Research Internship Scholarship

Amount

A $4,500 scholarship for the duration of the internship (number of scholarships varies).

Application deadline

  • March 31, 2027

Eligible Students

Undergraduate students enrolled in a program at a Quebec university (all programs).

Frequency

Offered annually, subject to funding availability.

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible for the Undergraduate Research Internship Grant in Artificial Intelligence, students must:

  • Be enrolled full-time (or be “deemed full-time”) in an undergraduate program during the winter semester preceding the internship;

  • Not have enrolled in a graduate program at any time before or during the internship;

  • Have already successfully completed 18 credits at a Quebec university and paid the associated tuition fees;

  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30 out of 4.33;

  • Have completed and submitted an application for an NSERC/CIHR/SSHRC Undergraduate Research Award (URA), or complete the application and demonstrate that it was not possible to apply to these programs (e.g., international students);

  • Plan to complete a summer internship at Laval University in the field of artificial intelligence or data science, lasting a minimum of 14 to 16 consecutive weeks, full-time (35 hours/week), between May 1 and August 31, 2026;

  • Not hold a full-time job during the internship period;

  • Have a supervisor or co-supervisor who is a regular member of the Institute for Intelligence and Data (IID) and who provides financial support in addition to the scholarship, amounting to a minimum of $4,500.

Please note that students with visiting student status are not eligible for this scholarship.

Selection criteria

  • Quality of the application (academic excellence and research aptitude);

  • Quality and relevance of the research internship proposal;

  • Alignment of the research topic with the IID’s programming or research priorities.

Submitting your application

The application must include the following documents:

  • Copy of the NSERC/CIHR/SSHRC BRPC application form (or justification if submission was not possible);

  • University transcripts;

  • Detailed curriculum vitae;

  • Description of the research internship project (1 page);

  • Letter of support from the supervisor or co-supervisor, a regular member of the IID, highlighting the candidate’s excellence and confirming the commitment to provide a scholarship supplement of at least $4,500.


Students with “deemed full-time” status (e.g., student-parents) must attach an official certificate from the Registrar’s Office.

Important note

International students enrolled in an undergraduate program at a Quebec university are eligible, subject to the conditions set forth. To this end, the student must complete (without submitting) an application to the BRPC-NSERC (Form 202) / CIHR / SSHRC and submit this application to the Institute of Intelligence and Data along with the other documents listed in the “Submission of Application” section.

 

The applicant authorizes the faculty sponsor from their department at their Quebec university to provide their name and NSERC-CIHR-SSHRC CGS application to the Institute for Intelligence and Data, in order to be considered for the Institute for Intelligence and Data’s Undergraduate Research Scholarship in Artificial Intelligence – Summer 2026 Internship.


This scholarship cannot be combined with a NSERC, CIHR, or SSHRC CGS. Applicants must apply to these programs and accept these scholarships as a priority. If no application has been submitted, a justification must be provided.

Objective

To provide financial assistance to students from institutions other than Université Laval to enable them to begin graduate studies (Ph.D.) at Université Laval in a field related to artificial intelligence or data science. 

IID Ph.D. Admission Scholarship

Amount

$7,000 scholarship.

Application deadlines

  • October 12, 2026

  • March 31, 2027

Eligible students

Graduate (Ph.D.) in any program relevant to AI or data science.

Frequency

Offered twice a year; the number of scholarships may vary depending on funding availability.

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible for this scholarship, students must:

  • Have completed a degree prior to admission to the doctoral program (undergraduate or graduate) at an institution other than Université Laval;

  • Be admitted as a full-time student at Université Laval in a relevant doctoral program;

  • Be supervised or co-supervised by a regular member of the IID who provides a minimum of $19,000 in annual financial support from grants, merit-based scholarships, or other external funding.

  • Visiting students are not eligible.

Selection criteria

  • Quality of the application (academic excellence, research aptitude, alignment of the project with the IID’s research priorities);

  • Proof that the degree required for admission to the doctoral program (undergraduate or graduate) was completed outside of Université Laval.

Comments

The scholarship is intended to supplement, not replace, regular funding.

Objective

To provide financial assistance to graduate students to enable them to begin or continue their studies at Université Laval in a field related to artificial intelligence or data science, taking into account their specific personal circumstances.

IID Graduate Studies Solidarity Scholarship 

Amount

$7,000 scholarship 

Application deadlines

  • October 12, 2026

  • March 31, 2027

Eligible students

Graduate students in all programs relevant to AI or data science.

Frequency

Offered twice a year; the number of scholarships may vary depending on funding availability.

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible for this scholarship, students must:

  • Never have received this scholarship before;

  • Be enrolled full-time in a relevant program;

  • Have a supervisor or co-supervisor who is a regular member of the IID;

  • Have a minimum annual funding of $15,000 (master’s) or $19,000 (doctoral);

  • Demonstrate a specific circumstance justifying a financial need.

Selection criteria

  • Demonstration of financial need;

  • Quality of the application and alignment with the IID’s objectives.

Comments

  • The purpose of the scholarship is to supplement, not replace, the funding typically provided by a supervisor or co-supervisor who is a regular member of the IID or by merit-based scholarships;

  • One of the conditions for receiving the scholarship is the demonstration of a specific personal situation justifying financial need;

  • The review committee may request additional verification and clarification to assess the applicant’s financial situation.

  • Letter of support from the supervisor or co-supervisor, a regular member of the IID, highlighting the candidate’s excellence and confirming the financial support offered or planned;

Objective

To offer an exemption from additional international tuition fees, up to a maximum annual amount of $20,000, to an international student beginning or continuing graduate studies at Université Laval in a field involving artificial intelligence or data science. This waiver eliminates the need to pay the additional amount typically required. The recipient student will thus pay the same tuition fees as a Quebec student.

IID Scholarship for Exemption from Additional Tuition Fees

Amount

Scholarship of up to $20,000 per year.

Application Deadline

  • February 1, 2027

Eligible Students

International students beginning or continuing graduate studies in any program relevant to AI or data science.

Frequency

Offered annually; the number of scholarships may vary depending on the availability of funds.

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible for the IID International Research Internship Scholarship, the student must:

  • Be enrolled at a recognized university outside Canada;

  • Plan to undertake a full-time (35 hours/week) research internship at Laval University in the field of artificial intelligence or data science for a duration of 4 to 6 consecutive months, beginning between March 1 and June 30, 2027;

  • Not hold another full-time job during the internship period;

  • Be supervised or co-supervised by a regular member of the IID who provides a minimum of $4,500 in additional financial support.

Selection Criteria

  • Quality of the application (academic excellence, research aptitude, and alignment of the project with the IID’s research priorities);

  • Proof of citizenship of a foreign country.

Comments

  • The scholarship covers the tuition surcharge for a maximum period of one year, up to a total of $20,000;

  • This scholarship may be awarded only once to any given individual;

  • The scholarship does not apply if: 

    • the student receives support from an organization that covers tuition fees;

    • the student obtains permanent resident status in Canada;

    • the student is enrolled part-time, as an auditor, or off-campus.

  • Description of the research project (2 pages);

  • Letter from the supervisor or co-supervisor who is a regular researcher at the IID, highlighting the candidate’s excellence, confirming the financial support offered or planned, and indicating the start date of the fellowship.

Objective

To enable international students pursuing graduate studies (Master’s 1 or Master’s 2) or enrolled in the penultimate or final year of an engineering program to gain academic research experience in artificial intelligence or data science through an internship at Université Laval.

IID Research Internship Grant for International Students

Amount

  • $4,500 scholarship 

Application deadline

  • November 25, 2026

Eligible Students

International students in any program relevant to AI or data science who are pursuing:

  • graduate studies (Master’s 1 or Master’s 2), or

  • in their penultimate or final year of an engineering program.

Frequency

Offered annually; the number of scholarships may vary depending on funding availability.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the IID International Research Internship Scholarship, the student must:

  • Be enrolled at a recognized university outside Canada;

  • Plan to undertake a full-time (35 hours/week) research internship at Laval University in the field of artificial intelligence or data science for a duration of 4 to 6 consecutive months, beginning between March 1 and June 30, 2027;

  • Not hold another full-time job during the internship period;

  • Be supervised or co-supervised by a regular member of the IID who provides a minimum of $4,500 in additional financial support.
